Microsoft Purview | Data Lifecycle Management: Separate Copilot retention policies from Teams chats

Microsoft is making changes to Copilot retention policies and Teams chats in an effort to streamline data lifecycle management in Microsoft Purview. Admins will now be able to create distinct retention policies for Copilot interactions, separate from Teams chats. These changes require a Microsoft 365 Copilot license and will be available in Public Preview from mid-November 2024, with General Availability beginning mid-January 2025.

Previously, Teams chat and Copilot interactions were treated as a single category, allowing admins to either include or exclude them within Purview Data Lifecycle Management policies. With this rollout, admins can create separate retention policies for Copilot interactions, even separating Copilot messages from Teams chat altogether. It's important to note that users will need a Microsoft 365 Copilot license to access these features.

To prepare for these changes, admins should review their current configurations to determine the impact on their organizations. They may also want to notify users and update any necessary documentation. The rollout will occur automatically by the specified dates, and updated documentation will be available prior to the rollout.
