Microsoft Purview – Data Lifecycle and Records Management – Scope the administration of retention and label policies

Microsoft Purview – Data Lifecycle and Records Management – Scope the administration of retention and label policies

If you're an admin using Microsoft Purview Data Lifecycle Management or Microsoft Purview Records Management solutions to manage retention and label policies, this update might be of interest to you. The update introduces a new way to assign administrative privileges, enabling admins to be given least-privilege access required for their job duties. The update allows for the use of Administrative Units in Azure Active Directory (AAD) to define units, such as geographies or departments, able to manage retention and label policies for a specific unit. Previously, only tenant-wide administrators for Data Lifecycle Management could be assigned.

After the rollout, Data Lifecycle Management and Records Management administrators within an organization can use administrative units to granularly define access to who can manage retention policies and label policies for different parts of the organization. For instance, administrators can define policies to apply only to Finance users, groups, or sites. The feature is expected to be rolled out to general availability by the end of July after public preview has completed from June to July. There is nothing that needs to be done to receive this feature, but consider updating training and reference material for Data Lifecycle Management and Records Management administrators and evaluate whether the new capability can work for you.
