Microsoft Purview compliance portal: Information Protection – SharePoint Online extends library permissions to downloaded files.

Microsoft Purview's Compliance Portal has announced a new feature for SharePoint Online that enables extending library permissions to downloaded files. The new capability ties together SharePoint Online's library permissions with Purview sensitivity labeling and protection, offering a streamlined method to revoke access to documents for individual users. SharePoint Online document library owners can set a label on the library, which will automatically apply to all unprotected and unlabeled Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and PDF files at rest in the target library, simplifying labeling in bulk. This capability also helps protect files as they are egressed from the original document library, such as for collaboration purposes or attempted exfiltration. Files downloaded from these libraries are protected at download, and users accessing these files outside of SharePoint Online have their rights evaluated in real-time against the online copy of the document, which reflects changes to user permissions on the online copy of the document. This new feature will be available for preview in November CY2024 and is set for release in March CY2025.
