Microsoft Purview Information Protection: Auto labeling (for files at rest in SharePoint Online) can now label PDF files

Microsoft has released an update to its auto-labeling feature for SharePoint Online that will allow for labeling of PDF files at rest. This will be enabled through the public preview, beginning in mid-July and scheduled to be completed by early August 2023. With this update, auto-labeling policies will need to be restarted in simulation to label PDFs at rest, and newly uploaded PDFs will be automatically labeled with existing policies. While the functionality is turned OFF by default, users can enable it through the SharePoint Admin PowerShell cmdlet and can also remove labels with encryption from PDFs via the Unlock-SPOSensitivityLabelEncryptedFile cmdlet. It is important for organizations to train their users on how to view protected PDFs in both browsers and apps as described in the update.
