Migration of Topics used in Viva Engage
In February 2024, Microsoft announced the retirement of Viva Topics and the return of Engage topics to Viva Engage. Organizations that possess tenants with data residing in Viva Topics or Topics lightweight management and who are not licensed to use Viva Topics after December 31, 2024, will have their data migrated into Viva Engage. The migration for all tenants notified will be completed by the end of January 2025, and during the transition, employees should not experience degradation in their core topics experiences.
The data to be migrated includes the topics themselves and their associated metadata such as followers, topic description, and creator. Following the migration, topic creators will gain the ability to delete topics they created, while Applicable admins will have the task to edit or delete topics within Viva Engage. Because of the retirement of Viva Topics, the integration with Viva Topics will deprecate, but the simplified topics model will remain to organize, amplify, route, and recall knowledge posted through topics. The rollout will begin in late December 2024, and it will affect only topics used in Viva Engage, while the exceptions are AI-suggested or access-controlled topics and the ones listed in your topic exclusion list.
The migration won't affect the topic experience for employees, and the topics used in Viva Engage will be migrated to Engage topics, preserving the topics applied to posts and their metadata.
