In this podcast episode, Gemma Milne interviews Dr. Tarika Barrett, the CEO of Girls Who Code, a nonprofit working to close the tech gender gap and empower young women to pursue careers in technology. They discuss the role of culture in perpetuating the gender gap in technology, the importance of expanding the definition of a "typical" coder, particular programs aimed at closing the gender gap, and what a more diverse and equitable technology industry might look like.
Dr. Tarika Barrett has over twenty years of experience in building educational pathways for young people, including her work at organizations like iMentor, the New York City Department of Education, New York University’s Center for Research on Teaching and Learning, and New Visions for Public Schools. She holds a Ph.D. in Teaching and Learning from New York University and is the recipient of the Dorothy Height Distinguished Alumni Achievement Award from NYU's Steinhardt School.
Dr. Barrett and Gemma Milne explore how initiatives such as Girls Who Code can help close the gender gaps in technology and lead to a more diverse and equitable future, beneficial not only for individuals but for corporations and society as a whole.
