Microsoft Outlook: Open attachments in desktop apps from the new Outlook for Windows
The new Outlook for Windows, linked with Microsoft 365 Roadmap ID 401123, allows users to open attachments of all types in their preferred desktop apps by double-clicking. This feature will streamline the process of opening attachments in desktop apps, making it more efficient in daily workflow. The update will roll out between late August and mid-October 2024, and no admin action will be required for this automatic update. Double-clicking will open the file in the desktop app specified as the default app to open that file type, while single-clicking will continue to open a preview of the file within Outlook. However, users will see a confirmation dialog every time they open an attachment of a certain file type unless they choose to dismiss it permanently. This automatic update will benefit all Microsoft Outlook for Windows users and is available by default.
