Microsoft Outlook: Contact deduplication

Microsoft Outlook: Contact deduplication

Microsoft Outlook is introducing an update that will automatically hide duplicate contacts that are exact or proper subsets of other contacts, which will streamline the contact lists and make them easier to manage. The update will be available from late August to September 2024 for Outlook on the web and the new Outlook for Windows, while other Outlook clients will display all contacts with synchronization across all platforms. Although hidden duplicates can be exported from classic Outlook clients, no admin action is required, but users should be notified of the change. This update is aimed to reduce contact list clutter and enhance user experience.

The hidden duplicates will still be available for access via classic Outlook clients, Outlook on Mac and Outlook mobile and can be exported for further review. The cleanup feature will only affect Outlook web app and the new Outlook for Windows. Regardless of the changes, any updates made to a contact in any Outlook client will be synchronized across all platforms. Users do not need to worry about not being able to access hidden duplicate contacts as they can still be manually accessed and exported if needed.
