Excel is blocking untrusted XLL add-ins by default
Microsoft is introducing a default change for Excel Windows desktop apps that are running XLL add-ins. From now on, XLL add-ins from untrusted locations will be blocked by default. Users will no longer be able to enable content with a click of a button for XLL add-ins in files from untrusted locations. Instead, a message will appear informing the user of the risk and providing a link to get more information about possible workarounds and support. This change aims to help users stay more secure by blocking popular attack techniques when using Excel XLL add-ins. The change will come to standard release in early March and is associated with Microsoft 365 Roadmap ID 115485. Organizations using Excel XLL add-ins need to follow the steps provided in the support article to ensure those add-ins are coming from a trusted location.
