Microsoft Teams: Increase in meeting passcodes length for added security
Microsoft Teams has announced that it will increase the length of meeting passcodes from 6 to 8 characters as a security measure, starting late October 2024. This change will apply only to external users joining with a Meeting ID and passcode, not to internal usage. There is no admin action required for this update. This step has been taken in light of recent global security threats on online meetings, and is aimed at making meetings on Microsoft Teams more secure. The passcodes will continue to consist of letters and numbers. The rollout is expected to begin in late October 2024, and general availability is expected to be reached by late November 2024. However, this update will not have any impact on the usage of Teams meetings within your organization as users typically access these via links or on their calendars. Only users joining with a Meeting ID and passcode will be required to enter a longer passcode. No admin action is needed for this update, and organizational users will not be impacted by this change, only external users. Hence, meeting organizers can reach out to these users for any needed support.
