New Microsoft Outlook for Windows: Add Microsoft accounts with non-Microsoft email addresses

Microsoft Outlook for Windows is about to become more user-friendly as it prepares to support the addition of personal Microsoft accounts with non-Microsoft email addresses. This feature enables users to access subscriptions such as Microsoft 365. The rollout will begin mid-November 2024 for Targeted Release and mid-December 2024 for General Availability, completing by mid-January 2025. With this update, users can add a new personal Microsoft account to Outlook to access their subscriptions, which will be useful, especially if the Microsoft account is linked to Microsoft subscriptions like Microsoft 365 and Copilot Pro. Before this rollout, the new Outlook for Windows would not support adding personal Microsoft accounts to Outlook, and users could not access any subscriptions they had linked to those accounts.

This update is turned on by default, and it is useful for those who have a personal Microsoft 365 or Copilot Pro subscription. Outlook will support connecting to personal email accounts like Outlook.com, Gmail, Yahoo, and more, enabling users to access email from those accounts in Outlook. This change will take effect from Targeted Release for new Outlook for Windows users with primary work or school accounts from mid-November 2024, while General Availability will begin mid-December 2024 for new Outlook for Windows users with primary work or school accounts, and it is expected to complete by mid-January 2025.

This update will not affect organizations as it only enables users to add a new personal Microsoft account that does not use a Microsoft email address (such as outlook.com, hotmail.com, or live.com) at Settings > Accounts > Your accounts > Additional Microsoft accounts to access any subscriptions linked to that personal Microsoft account.
