Microsoft Teams: Legal hold and eDiscovery support for webinars and town halls

Microsoft Teams is set to launch a more direct integration with Microsoft Purview by July 31, 2024, which will allow legal holds to be integrated more efficiently. Legal holds on data before this date will still be processed through SharePoint until the transition is complete. Microsoft Teams administrators can take advantage of Microsoft Purview eDiscovery legal holds to target SharePoint locations where Teams data is kept. This move is necessary because of heightened security requirements and the need for specialized compliance support. The integration of Teams legal holds with Purview will begin on July 31, 2024. Legal holds through SharePoint will not apply to any new Teams webinars or town hall events created after July 31, 2024, as the data won't be housed in SharePoint. However, legal holds on events created before July 31, 2024, will continue to work through SharePoint. The expected date for full support for Purview eDiscovery legal holds is early 2025. This change will not affect Microsoft Teams' regular operations. The rollout will occur automatically by the specified deadline and will require no admin action. Admins can update any relevant documentation and notify the team of the change.
