Microsoft Stream Migration Tool: Partial Migration and Orphan Video Support

Microsoft Stream Migration Tool: Partial Migration and Orphan Video Support

If you're planning to migrate your video content from Stream (Classic) to Stream (on SharePoint), the Stream migration tool has got you covered. This tool allows IT admins to select and migrate content efficiently, saving time and OneDrive and SharePoint storage.

And it's about to get even better. Microsoft is releasing two new features to the Stream migration tool:

  • Partial migration support: This feature lets you select only the content you want to migrate, filtering by publish date, last viewed date, number of views, and content type.
  • Orphan video support: This feature enables you to migrate videos that have no assigned owner in Stream (Classic), making it possible to recover videos created by users who are no longer with your organization.

These new features will become available to some customers on June 1, 2023, and all customers by late June 2023. Admins can access the migration tool by signing into the Stream Admin Center and navigating to Stream Migration > Migration tool. If your organization has more than 40,000 containers, you will need to add containers manually to migrate orphan videos.

Note that Stream (Classic) will be retired on February 15, 2024, for all customers except GCC customers. It's recommended that you begin planning your migration and decide which content to migrate and where to store it in Stream (on SharePoint).
