SharePoint: User experience and Image Coherence in SharePoint Online (SPO)

This post discusses an upcoming change aimed at enhancing user experience by providing a coherent profile photo experience across Microsoft 365. The change will impact users of SharePoint Online (SPO) who do not have an exchange license or use Delve for uploading images, as well as SPO admins who upload user profile images on behalf of end-users. The change will roll out in mid-August 2023 and be completed by late March 2024.

Currently, users who have uploaded multiple images across different apps in Microsoft 365 may see different images displayed in SPO compared to other Microsoft 365 apps. Going forward, SPO will display images sourced via MS Graph endpoint from Microsoft People System (MPS) to ensure consistency across all Microsoft 365 experiences. Users with Exchange licenses will not be impacted. To ensure profile coherence, local uploads from SPO to the MySite host will be disabled, and centralized uploads to MPS will be enabled instead.

Users and admins should use the "Universal Me" control on the top right corner of the SharePoint Home page or Delve to upload profile images. SPO admins will no longer be able to upload images via SPO Admin Centre but will be requested to use the MAC Admin Centre or AAD instead. No immediate action is required from users at this point.
