Basic Authentication Retirement for Outlook Service

Basic Authentication Retirement for Outlook Service

Microsoft is retiring basic authentication for the Outlook Service protocol in Exchange Online, which is used only by the native Email and Calendar app on Windows 10 and 11. This change is part of a broader effort to improve security features by turning off basic authentication in the worldwide multi-tenant service. The retirement of basic authentication in the Outlook Service protocol is expected to occur in the coming weeks, and a very small number of users using basic auth with the native mail and calendar app will need to update their authentication settings to continue using the app. If any users encounter an authentication prompt, they should remove and add back the account to the app. To check if you have impacted users, you can use the Azure AD sign-in reports and filter for Universal Outlook as the client app.
