If you've been curious about the Windows Backup system component as installed in Windows 10 and Windows 11, then this overview will provide you with key information. This component, which is installed on devices as part of Windows updates that are released on and after August 22, 2023, is designed to provide a cloud solution for backing up files and folders, settings, credentials, and apps.
Although the Windows Backup app is currently primarily focused on consumer devices, it may not be used by Microsoft Enterprise ID (formerly Azure AD) or Active Directory (AD) users. This overview includes answers to frequently asked questions related to this component. For more information about Windows Backup, see Backup and Restore in Windows.
Windows Backup is installed by Windows 10 and Windows 11 updates released on and after August 22, 2023. The component is not supported for Enterprise ID or AD, and if you attempt to run it in these scenarios, you will receive the error message "This feature is not supported by your organization." As Windows Backup is a system component, it cannot be removed, but certain Windows editions allow for Windows Update to prevent it from appearing on specific user interface screens for Enterprise ID or AD users in the future.
