M365 Apps on Windows are set to receive a compliance configuration update to allow different sensitivity labels for files and emails. Word, Excel, PowerPoint clients, and Outlook email clients will support this new admin setting. The update is set to roll out in late February 2023 for public preview and late March 2023 for the current channel release. The update will not impact organizations by default, but those with specific label configuration needs can use the set-label cmdlet or information protection admin UX to configure it. Following configuration, Word, Excel, PowerPoint will only display labels with file scope, while Outlook will display only email scope labels. To prepare for this update, organizations can refer to the Information Protection admin configuration.
