License enforcement for Microsoft Purview Information Protection for sensitivity labels

Starting January 2024, new customers who wish to utilize or continue using Information Protection sensitivity labels are required to have specific licenses. Customers already using sensitivity labels without the appropriate licenses have a grace period until early April 2024. It is essential for admins and users utilizing Information Protection sensitivity labels to have the necessary licenses assigned to them. For manual application of sensitivity labels for varying types of documents, emails, meetings, groups, and sites, both tenant admins and end-users need Microsoft 365 E5/A5/G5/E3/A3/G3/F1/F3/Business Premium/OneDrive for Business (Plan 2), Enterprise Mobility + Security E3/E5, Office 365 E5/A5/E3/A3, AIP Plan 1, and AIP Plan 2 licenses. Whereas, for client and server-side automatic sensitivity labeling, Microsoft 365 E5/A5/G5 E5 Compliance, Microsoft 365 E5/A5/G5 Information Protection and Governance, and Office 365 E5/A5/G5 licenses are required. The post provides a link with a list of licenses and details. Note that this is not a new change, sensitivity labels have been part of the above licenses since launch. If admins do not have the required licenses after early April 2024, they will not create, apply or modify sensitivity labels. This message serves as a reminder to ensure that admins and users who use Information Protection sensitivity labels have the necessary licenses. Customers who already hold the licenses mentioned are not affected by this change.
