Microsoft has announced that IE11 desktop application will be permanently disabled, with the February 14, 2023 Windows security update ("B" release). This retirement follows two phases: a redirection phase that is currently in progress and an upcoming Windows Update phase that will disable IE11 permanently. IE11 retirement will affect all IE11 activity, including shortcuts, invoking iexplore.exe, opening shortcuts or file associations that use IE11, and removal of the IE11 icons from Start Menu and taskbar. The update will only affect in-scope SKUs. Microsoft advises organizations to use the Disable IE policy to remove IE11 from their devices to control the timing of permanent disablement. Microsoft Edge will now be redirected for opening files or URLs. Businesses are advised to complete their transition away from IE11 to avoid any disruption.
If you require assistance or have site compatibility issues with IE mode, reach out to App Assure for free assistance. However, if reliance on IE11 continues after the Windows Update, businesses may face business disruption. Therefore, it is necessary to act beforehand and take the necessary actions to complete the transition.
