Microsoft has officially announced the retirement of the Internet Explorer 11 (IE11) desktop app as of June 15, 2022. The retirement is taking place in two phases: a redirection phase, presently in progress, and an upcoming Windows Update phase that involves the permanent disabling of IE11. The windows update that disables IE11 is expected to roll out on February 14, 2023. Affected users will have IE11 activity, including shortcuts using IE11 and invoking iexplore.exe redirected to Microsoft Edge. The IE11 icons on the Start Menu and taskbar will also be removed. The Windows Update will only affect in-scope SKUs.
For organizations that want to remove IE11, it is recommended that they use the Disable IE policy to remove IE11 before the Windows Update to regulate the timing of the permanent IE11 disablement.
This shift may cause business disruption for companies that have yet to transition away from IE11. Organizations should take action to ensure they are prepared and that their systems remain functional after the change.
For further information and guidance on how to prepare, users may refer to the Microsoft FAQ and blog post.
