Microsoft Teams: Meeting Chat shown by default in Gallery View with Teams Room

Microsoft Teams is introducing a change to its Gallery view with Teams Room, where Meeting Chat will now be shown by default. This means that during a meeting, users can see incoming chat messages on the front-of-room display. However, the default chat experience can be easily configured via Teams Admin Center or XML setting. No action is needed to prepare for this change, which is set for global availability between early and late April 2024.

This change will allow users to have visibility of a meeting chat on the right panel in Gallery view during a meeting. The chat icon button to show/hide the chat panel will be moved from the view switcher to the uBar, and the default chat experience in Gallery view can be configured via Teams Admin Center or XML setting <OpenMeetingChatByDefault>. The default value is ‘true.’ However, IT admins should note that the existing <ShowMeetingChat> setting hides the meeting chat completely from all in-meeting layouts as well as the chat button in-meeting. Therefore, <ShowMeetingChat> overrides <OpenMeetingChatByDefault>.

No action is needed to prepare for this change. However, IT admins may want to notify their users about this change and update any relevant documentation as appropriate.
