Introducing Windows 11 checkpoint cumulative updates
Windows 11 will be introducing checkpoint cumulative updates for devices running on version 24H2 or later and Windows Server 2025. This new update system will allow for smaller update files, resulting in a quicker and more efficient update experience for Windows users. These updates will be sent automatically, without any user action required, and will become available in the second half of 2024. Currently, users can preview this experience in Windows Insider's Preview Build 26120.1252 (Dev Channel).
This optimization will allow organizations to receive features and security enhancements through smaller, incremental differentials containing only the changes since the previous checkpoint cumulative update. This will help organizations save time, bandwidth, and hard drive space. Users will need to download the Windows 11, version 24H2 update when it becomes available in late 2024. After that, checkpoint cumulative updates will automatically become part of the usual update experience.
For more information on this update system, users can visit the Introducing Windows 11 checkpoint cumulative updates page and try out the preview experience in Windows Insider's Preview Build 26120.1252 (Dev Channel). They can also review how quality updates work in Windows monthly updates explained. For those wanting a refresher on prior improvements, Faster. Smaller. Windows 11, version 22H2 update fundamentals is also available.
