Microsoft Authenticator Lite (for Outlook) Support in Legacy, Per-user MFA Policy
Microsoft has made its Authenticator Lite (for Outlook) Generally Available, enabling users to access the feature as part of the "Notifications through mobile app" method in the legacy, per-user MFA policy. Previously, Microsoft Authenticator needed to be enabled in the modern Authentication methods policy. However, the ability to manage authentication methods in the legacy, per-user MFA policy will be retired on September 30th, 2024, and Microsoft plans to update the "Notification through mobile app" method in the legacy policy from mid-September 2023.
If your organization still manages authentication methods in the legacy, per-user MFA policy, users who aren't already using the Microsoft Authenticator app will see the option to set up Microsoft Authenticator Lite in Outlook when the "Notification through mobile app" method is enabled. Companies that do not want to use Authenticator Lite can disable it by managing Microsoft Authenticator as an authentication method in the modern Authentication methods policy. The update will allow users to craft more secure authentication policies that utilize Microsoft Authenticator Lite among other security tools.
If you're looking to inform end-users about the new Microsoft Authenticator Lite experience, Microsoft offers templates to help ease the transition. Plan accordingly to update your policies and ensure that you maintain a secure authentication method for all of your organization's data.
