Automatic migration of legacy Office 365 Message Encryption to Microsoft Purview Message Encryption

The legacy Office 365 Message Encryption (OME) in the Exchange admin center will be replaced and retired by Microsoft Purview Message Encryption. Microsoft will process all mail flow rules that currently apply OME protection to Microsoft Purview Message Encryption protection if no action is taken. This change will enhance the customized notification mail received by the recipients. From April 1, 2023, admins cannot make configuration changes to apply or remove Office 365 Message Encryption protection in mail flow rules. The deployment process of automatically applying Microsoft Purview Message encryption in mail flow rules will begin and be completed by July 1, 2023.

Microsoft Purview Message Encryption has more security features and flexibility. It provides encrypted mail to anyone inside or outside an organization with an improved user experience for recipients. For instance, Microsoft 365 users with Outlook clients can view the message inline while non-Microsoft 365 users will receive a link-based experience to open the mail. Additionally, Microsoft Purview Message Encryption supports encrypted attachments on download to protect sensitive data at rest. The post explains the differences in the behavioral and experiential aspects of the two programs and their impact on internal and external M365 recipients.

In summary, the legacy OME in the Exchange admin center will be replaced and retired by Microsoft Purview Message Encryption.
