Removal of MFA text message delivery via WhatsApp in India

Removal of MFA text message delivery via WhatsApp in India

Microsoft has announced the removal of the ability to send authentication messages via WhatsApp for users in India starting from March 1st, 2024. This is in compliance with an updated regulation in India that prohibits the use of over-the-top (OTT) apps like WhatsApp for business communication. Microsoft Entra had previously been delivering one-time passcodes (OTP) for multifactor authentication (MFA) via WhatsApp to some users in India, among other countries. However, to comply with this update from Meta, Microsoft will remove support for WhatsApp in India by March 1st, 2024. Users who have been receiving OTP messages via WhatsApp will start receiving them via SMS again, just like before, starting mid-February 2024. No action is required from the end-users or organizations, as Microsoft will ensure all traffic is diverted back to the SMS channel by March 1st, 2024. It is recommended that organizations update their training and documentation as appropriate.
