Optimized Multifactor Authentication text message delivery through WhatsApp
Entra ID Multifactor Authentication currently supports delivering one-time passcodes (OTPs) via text message, but to enhance its service, Entra ID will roll out delivery to WhatsApp in select regions. Starting from September 2023, users in India, Indonesia, and New Zealand may begin receiving multifactor authentication (MFA) text messages via WhatsApp. Users that receive MFA text messages and have WhatsApp on their phone will get this experience. The sender agent in WhatsApp where users will see the OTPs will be branded as Microsoft with a verified checkmark. Organizations currently using Entra ID enterprise customer are recommended to notify their help desk about this upcoming change. If organizations do not want their users to receive MFA text messages via WhatsApp, they will need to disable text messages as an authentication method in their organization. Entra ID will expand the use of WhatsApp as an OTP delivery channel to other countries starting from October-November 2023.
