Microsoft Defender Antivirus has announced changes to its support plan for the anti-malware scan engine update (MpEngine.dll). Moving forward, only N-2 versions of the engine update will be supported, effective from May 1, 2024. This is due to the new security intelligence update logic that is dependent on newer scan engine logic, to ensure customers are not running an older scan engine version with a known vulnerability. To remain fully supported, it is recommended to keep current with the latest engine updates, with minimum requirements of version 1.1.23110.2, version 1.1.24010.10, or anything newer. Failure to update may result in new detections not triggering and the potential for crashes with the newer Defender Antivirus platform updates. It is important to have a supported mpengine.dll version installed to prepare for these changes.
