Word, Excel, and PowerPoint for macOS – Planned update to compatibility Office add-ins and ODBC drivers
A planned update for Office on macOS is set to roll out, requiring Office add-ins and ODBC drivers to be codesigned with a valid Apple Developer ID. This update, expected in mid-November 2024, may affect workflows that utilize unsigned dynamic libraries. As developers work to ensure compliance, admins are encouraged to verify and prepare for the update. This change demands compliance to promote code integrity and compliance with macOS development standards. Note that this change is unlikely to affect most users since most dynamic libraries used with Office apps are already codesigned. However, developers who use unsigned or ad-hoc-signed dynamic libraries within Word, Excel, or PowerPoint for macOS may need to get an updated version of the product from the original software developer. To ensure a seamless transition, developers are reminded to ensure their products are codesigned with an Apple Developer ID in preparation for the rollout. Admins may take action by blocking all non-Microsoft libraries from running within Visual Basic macros, but it should be considered only if necessary for the organization’s requirements on macOS computers. This update is set to appear in production in mid-November 2024.
