Can We Build Dynamics 365 Customer Engagement Reports With The Latest Version Of Visual Studio?
Reports are an essential aspect of Dynamics 365 Customer Engagement applications that require a valid version of SQL Server Data Tools (SSDT). The minimum version of Visual Studio that supports it is 2015. Moreover, installing the Dynamics 365 Report Authoring Extension is necessary to unlock the required FetchXML connector option. The latest version of Report Authoring Extensions was updated earlier this year, and Microsoft has also updated the tooling to ensure full support for modern authentication prompts and avoid any errors. Visual Studio 2019 can be used alongside Report Authoring Extensions. However, support for Visual Studio 2022 is currently not possible since the required Microsoft Reporting Services Projects extension does not work with this version of Visual Studio, which is expected to be addressed later. Despite other more attractive alternatives such as Word templates or even paginated reports, Dynamics 365 Reports remain a fundamental and widely used feature across many different application deployments. Therefore, modern tooling support equips developers to focus on addressing the task rather than installing yet another legacy Visual Studio application onto their machines.
