Outlook is introducing an UI update that will affect the message list selection, with the aim of saving space on the message list. The update will replace the selection circles on the left side of each row with a select mode, which the user will have to enter before checkboxes appear. The select mode button will be located in the top-right corner of the message list. The update will commence in mid-May 2023 and is expected to be completed by early June 2023. The new feature will affect users who do not have "Sender Images" enabled in the message list. In case users have Sender Images turned on, hovering over the images will still show the checkboxes, even if they did not enter "Select Mode". To check if you have Sender Images enabled, go to Settings > Mail > Layout and scroll down to "Sender image".
This change may require users to adjust to the new selection user experience. However, mouse and keyboard multi-selection, where users hold down Ctrl or Shift, will continue to work as before. To prepare for this update, there is nothing you need to do. The message is associated with Microsoft 365 Roadmap ID 125905. For more information, please visit the given link.
