Copilot Studio: Agent Integration Approaches — Tools, Knowledge, and Agents
In Copilot Studio, agent integration employs the same fundamental integration concepts and patterns used in traditional enterprise integration. For instance, an agent can utilize APIs, Power Automate flows, connectors, or hybrid integration methods to communicate with systems such as Dynamics 365, Dataverse, SAP, SQL Server, or other enterprise platforms. Simply put, while integration patterns dictate how systems communicate, agent integration leverages these methods to connect the AI agent with enterprise capabilities and data. When designing agent integration, it is crucial to consider authentication, authorization, security, data access, APIs, integration patterns, error handling, performance, monitoring, and governance. The agent should only access information and perform actions for which the user has the requisite permissions. In essence, agent integration acts as a bridge between the Copilot Studio agent and enterprise systems, enabling the agent to securely utilize business data and capabilities while providing users with a seamless conversational experience.
In Copilot Studio, agent integration options are mainly divided into three categories: Tools, Knowledge, and Agents. Each category has a different purpose and helps the agent perform different tasks when it is running.
Tools allow the agent to take actions or interact with other systems,
Knowledge helps the agent find and use relevant information, and
Agents allow one agent to work with or use another agent to handle specific tasks.
