Retirement of custom default result sources in Microsoft Search for modern search experiences

Retirement of custom default result sources in Microsoft Search for modern search experiences

In a bid to improve the flexibility and intention of result sources, Microsoft will retire custom default result sources for KQL rewrite of the modern search experience in mid-April 2023. The original feature, which allowed for the definition of custom KQL filters for search result items, will be replaced with vertical configuration, which enables greater flexibility per vertical, as outlined in the Differences between the classic and modern search experiences in SharePoint. As a result, organizations using a custom default result source for KQL rewrite of the modern search experience are advised to move their KQL rewrites to the vertical administration configuration before mid-April 2023.

Note that query rules at site or hub site scoped searches with promoted results remain unaffected since the promoted results are returned in the modern search experience for sites irrespective of the result source. For more information, read about how to manage query rules.

Overall, this change aims to enhance the flexibility and intention of result sources in Microsoft Search for modern search experiences.
