Microsoft 365 Groups membership and ownership quirks persist even in 2023
Despite being governed by simple rules, Microsoft 365 Groups membership and ownership experience inconsistencies even in the year 2023. While on the Exchange Online side, an owner must be a member of the Group, this requirement is ignored by the Graph API. Additionally, the Azure AD UI fails to enforce the rule that groups must have at least one owner, due to the use of Graph API batching. These quirks have persisted, making it challenging for administrators to maintain the necessary controls for Group management.
