Microsoft 365 Groups membership and ownership quirks persist even in 2023
In the world of Microsoft 365 Groups, membership and ownership come with their own set of rules and quirks that persist even as far off as 2023. Despite being governed by simple rules, the various administrative endpoints still struggle to provide consistent experiences, resulting in discrepancies between the Exchange Online and Graph API endpoints.
In particular, Exchange Online's requirement that owners must also be members of a Group is ignored by the Graph API. Additionally, the Azure AD UI fails to enforce the rule that every Group must have at least one owner, possibly due to Graph API batching. These inconsistencies can make it tricky for administrators to navigate the nuances of Microsoft 365 Groups membership and ownership, and it highlights the importance of maintaining a thorough understanding of the platform's various quirks.
