Heather Downing: Retooling for the Future - Episode 190
In this episode, Heather Downing, an experienced coder and entrepreneur, shares her insights on retooling for the future. Heather encourages programmers to present on topics outside of the office and in the community and is an international technical speaker. She emphasizes the importance of considering that there are now four different generations of people that learn completely differently, and how recognizing this is essential for the new multigenerational community. Heather also talks about the significance of finding your own favorite documentation, letting beginners ask the right questions, and giving them the space to problem solve. Moreover, she explains how time boxing and The Pomodoro Technique can provide structure for productivity, and how focusing on getting one percent better at something every day can make goals more manageable. She also discusses the importance of resiliency, communication, and listening for software development, as well as whether a University degree is necessary to go into software or not. Finally, she suggests having grace and understanding when looking at older work and finding ways to adjust instead of completely starting over.
