Re: Power BI’s next chapter: The evolution of business intelligence
Really exciting direction. FabCon in Barcelona made it very clear how quickly Fabric Apps are evolving, and for us this is probably the most interesting part of the next chapter of Power BI.
Fabric Apps look like a very strong fit for one of our main customer-facing scenarios. The one missing piece for us is the equivalent of Power BI Embedded's app-owns-data model:
- users authenticate only in our own application, with no Fabric/Power BI identity
- our backend/service principal owns the Fabric access
- the Fabric App is embedded inside our application
- the embedded session is created without requiring a delegated user or master user
At Ask the Experts at FabCon, I understood that something enabling this scenario might be coming very soon.
Is native service principal / application-only embedding for Fabric Apps already available, rolling out, or planned?
We've been testing the new external embedding support quite extensively. Today we can make the scenario work with a delegated master user, but the current brokered authorization flow requires a delegated token. We have also tested SPN ownership of a Fabric App, where Functions currently fail in the same way reported here: https://github.com/microsoft/rayfin/issues/89#issuecomment-5984380651
Even a pointer to the intended auth flow, preview, or upcoming capability would be extremely helpful.
If app-only embedding lands, it removes one of the last major blockers for using Fabric Apps as the application layer for our external customers.
