Microsoft Whiteboard: Retirement of legacy whiteboards and transition to OneDrive-backed whiteboards

Microsoft Whiteboard is retiring legacy whiteboards and the standalone app by September 2026. Enterprise users must migrate legacy whiteboards to OneDrive-backed versions before August 22, 2026. After September 5, legacy whiteboards will be deleted permanently, and the standalone app will be deprecated by September 14. Microsoft Whiteboard: Retirement of legacy whiteboards and standalone Whiteboard app Microsoft Whiteboard is completing its transition to OneDrive-backed whiteboards. Enterprise customers must migrate any remaining legacy whiteboards before the migration tooling is retired. After the retirement dates, legacy whiteboards that are not migrated or exported will be permanently deleted and cannot be recovered. Key dates August 22, 2026 Migration tooling for legacy enterprise whiteboards is retired. Users with personal Microsoft accounts can no longer create or edit whiteboards. September 5, 2026 – Legacy whiteboards are permanently deleted. September 14, 2026 – The standalone Microsoft Whiteboard app is deprecated. Impact on your organization This change affects: Enterprise customers with legacy Microsoft Whiteboard content that has not been migrated to OneDrive-backed whiteboards. Users with personal Microsoft accounts who use Microsoft Whiteboard. Organizations that use the standalone Microsoft Whiteboard app. After August 22, 2026: The migration tool for legacy enterprise whiteboards will no longer be available. Remaining legacy whiteboards cannot be migrated. Users with personal Microsoft accounts can no longer create or edit whiteboards. After September 5, 2026: Any remaining legacy whiteboards will be permanently deleted and cannot be recovered. After September 14, 2026: The standalone Microsoft Whiteboard app (Desktop, Mobile) will no longer be supported. Enterprise users will access Microsoft Whiteboard through Microsoft Teams. Action required Migrate all remaining legacy whiteboards to OneDrive-backed whiteboards before August 22, 2026. Verify that required whiteboards have been migrated successfully. Notify affected users of migration and deletion deadlines. Update internal documentation and training materials to direct users to Microsoft Whiteboard in Microsoft Teams. Inform users with personal Microsoft accounts to export any whiteboards they want to retain before September 5, 2026. There will be no recovery or migration option for legacy whiteboards after they are permanently deleted. Message ID: MC1441775
