Azure Storage Mover can now migrate your SMB shares to Azure file shares.
On April 17, 2023, we announced the general availability of Azure Storage Mover , which is a fully managed, hybrid migration service that makes migrating files and folders into Azure a breeze. This service will be continuously enhanced with a richer feature set.
What’ new with Azure Storage Mover?
- Azure Storage Mover can now migrate your SMB shares to Azure file shares in the cloud (Public Preview). Together with Just-in-time permissions setting and Azure Key Vault, your migration is secure from source to target. Using the general available version of our Agent VM (virtual machines) the update to support this feature will be integrated seamlessly. You can start right now migrating SMB shares to the cloud following the documentation. How to manage Azure Storage Mover endpoints | Microsoft Learn
The Mission of Azure Storage Mover is to provide an end-to-end managed experience that enables enterprise customers to easily discover their entire unstructured data estate (on-prem and other clouds), provide a clear assessment of how the data can be moved into Azure (online & offline) or within Azure and finally provide a performant, cost effective, secure, and reliable experience to one-time migrate or periodically replicate data to Azure.
- Discover: Find sources for migration and load them into the service. This allows admins to selectively advance those sources through a migration that supports a workload they like to cut over to using storage in Azure.
- Assess: Report on the contents of a source to pre-determine migration outcomes and aid cloud storage design decisions.
- Plan: Create migration projects for customer workloads and collate sources, targets, and their migration settings.
- Deploy: The Deploy phase allows admins to bulk deploy the storage resources in the plan. Admins do not need to leave the guided experience or learn to create a BICEP template for Azure storage deployment at scale.
- Migrate: Support for more sources (online & offline) and Azure storage targets.
- Post-Migrate: Review of validation and verification results create the confidence to delete the source. Additional best practices may be connected: Storage account security config, Azure Backup, adjust soft delete retention period, consider Defender for Storage, etc.

What about the Azure Storage Migration Program?
We will continue our existing partnerships with Atempo, Cirrus Data, Data Dynamics, and Komprise and encourage you to learn more about the scenarios that these partners address which are not possible with Storage Mover’s current feature set. Migration from on-premises SAN to Azure Elastic SAN, S3 to Blob Storage, NFS to Azure Files, and NFS/SMB to Azure NetApp Files are all offered by our valued partner and available for free through the Storage Migration Program.
