Microsoft Teams: Block users from joining externally hosted Teams meetings
Microsoft Teams is introducing a new feature that allows tenant admins to regulate whether certain users in their organization can join externally hosted Teams meetings. This feature will limit the ability of these regulated users to join externally hosted meetings based on policy configuration, adding an extra layer of protection from potential data exfiltration for specific user groups within the organization.
Currently, Teams for work or school users can join any externally hosted Teams meetings, determined by the external access configuration set by tenant admins. After this feature's launch, the policy configuration will provide an added layer of protection and regulate whether or not users can join externally hosted meetings while using the Teams desktop app or web client.
The new policy, "People can join meetings hosted by," allows users to be able to join meetings with various behaviors, such as anyone, people and guests in my org and trusted orgs, and people and guests in my org only. Tenant admins should identify the users or groups that may need to be regulated in terms of the external hosted meetings that they can join.
This feature will begin rolling out in early February 2024 and is associated with Microsoft 365 Roadmap ID 187230. For businesses and organizations, it is essential to prepare and take necessary actions to ensure data security and compliance.
