149 - AI Frontiers: The future of scale with Ahmed Awadallah and Ashley Llorens

In this Microsoft Research podcast episode, Ashley Llorens, an AI scientist and engineer, hosts a conversation with Ahmed H. Awadallah, a Senior Principal Research Manager, about the future of large-scale artificial intelligence (AI) models. Awadallah shares insights on improving the efficiency of large-scale AI models, the shift in dynamics between model size and amount of data for model training, and the need for better evaluation strategies. He also delves into the recently published paper "Orca: Progressive Learning from Complex Explanation Traces of GPT-4," which explores the use of large-scale AI models to improve the performance of smaller ones. As we move toward a new era of AI, whereby large-scale models like the GPT-4 will transform problem-solving and language capabilities, Awadallah provides valuable insight into the future of AI and its potential to benefit humanity.

Find out more about Orca: Progressive Learning from Complex Explanation Traces of GPT-4, phi-1.5 technical report, AutoGen: Enabling Next-Gen LLM Applications via Multi-Agent Conversation Framework, and LIDA: Automatic Generation of Grammar-Agnostic Visualizations and Infographics using Large Language Models. Also, explore how AI explorers impact foundation models and the next era of AI as well as the role of Microsoft Research within the AI space.
