Re: Power BI August 2026 Feature Summary
murray-kp DataZoe Hello!
I have a concern about Microsoft 365 Copilot's integration with Power BI data (Message Center post MC1323266),
it just went GA and by default allows all Copilot users to query raw underlying data from any PBI data model they have only READ access to.
Historically, extracting hidden fields, detail-level rows, or raw underlying data required BUILD permission on the semantic model or the report's "Allow underlying data export" setting. This feature requires neither and completely bypasses both
This fundamentally changes how the permissions and report settings have always worked. now it completely bypasses the BUILD permission and Export options. Same as the Explore data option that we had to TURN OFF tenant wide due to undesirable consequences.
PLEASE consider:
- Default to opt-in, not opt-out, for new semantic models/reports.
- Provide a per-semantic-model option
- Require Build permission, not just Read, for any path that can return raw/detailed/hidden-field data - regardless of which Copilot surface is used to request it. Or introduce new sharing option alongside Sharing and Build.
