Dynamics 365 Field Service: Forecast asset usage to predict maintenance due dates

Business value Usage-based maintenance aligns service with the work an asset has actually performed, but a current meter reading alone does not tell the organization when the next threshold will be reached. Forecasting the asset’s expected usage rate converts meter-based maintenance from a reactive trigger into a forward-looking planning signal. Maintenance and reliability teams can use the projected due date to plan labor, parts, capacity, and customer downtime before the threshold is reached. Because the estimate is derived from the individual asset’s recent operating history, it reflects real utilization more closely than a generic calendar assumption while remaining explainable and reviewable by planners. Feature detail Calculate a projected usage rate for each asset from the trailing 30-day mean of its historical meter-usage logs. This rate represents the asset’s recent pace of operation and drives all projected due dates for usage-based maintenance activities on that asset. For each usage-based maintenance requirement, use the calculated rate to translate the remaining usage before the next threshold into an estimated calendar due date. The configured meter threshold remains the maintenance requirement; the projected date provides the advance planning signal used by maintenance forecasts and lead-window work-order generation. Store the calculated usage rate and the date and time when it was last calculated. Exposing both values lets planners assess how fresh the estimate is and whether the available history is sufficient to rely on the projection. Apply outlier protection when calculating the trailing mean so isolated meter spikes, incorrect readings, or other anomalous input data do not disproportionately change the projected usage rate. Recalculate the rate as additional meter history becomes available so future maintenance predictions continue to reflect the asset’s recent usage.
