Mistake #5 – The lack of low-level design document

Mistake #5 – The lack of low-level design document

Why Every System Integrator Needs to Focus on Their Low-Level Design Strategy?

The low-level design document is the first step in the design process. A low-level design document contains a description of the problem and a list of requirements that need to be fulfilled by the design. This is one of the important documents to ensure that the project's goals are met.

Functional consultants & Architects need to be able to communicate their ideas in a way that is easy for developers to understand. Low-level documentation is the key to successful collaboration between designers and developers.

Low-level documentation includes things like wireframes, sketches, mock-ups, and prototypes. This type of documentation is essential for functional consultants & Architects because it helps them communicate their ideas effectively and in a way that is easy for developers to understand. Before your team starts development, finalize the low-level design. This includes making important decisions about the basic features of your app.

The risks with this type of action involve poor coding, unnecessary business functions, or poorly run interfaces between other systems. These are all factors that could cause the system to have low performance.

You should hold a meeting with the entire team to discuss the finalised design and make sure every team member agrees before moving on to development.

The low-level design was completed when about 30%-40% of the project had been designed. The design of the developed component was flawed so it had to be patched up by senior members of the team or whoever else could do it. This (3%) is what slowed the overall effort down.

Designing and developing a low-level design document can greatly reduce the chances of making mistakes during a specific project

  1. Before development begins, you need to finalize the design and set standards for low-level details. These include implementation architecture and coding standards
  2. Before starting on a new design, everyone in the team must have an understanding of what the final product will be
  3. For projects to be consistent and secure, I recommend using peer review and a code review checklist. This way, colleagues will have a chance to confirm adherence to the standards set forward by the dev team before rolling out changes

Conclusion/Takeaways

The first tip is to make sure that you are not writing a design document for something that already exists. If the custom process already has a design doc, then it's not necessary for you to write another one. The second tip is to make sure that you are not writing about something that has no value or is too niche. It's important for the product owner to know what they need and what they don't need from the design document. The third tip is to be concise in your writing as possible. This will help with time management and it will also help with communicating your thoughts more clearly. It is also important to have a good understanding of the business objectives and requirements. The use of personas and user stories are helpful in this process.
