Pick a Mountain, Any Mountain
Mountains may seem like just larger-than-average piles of dirt and rock, but they can do extraordinary things in an individual's life. In this article, the author recounts his experience of climbing Pike's Peak, a 13-mile journey from Manitou Springs, CO, rising up 7800 feet, past the tree line, half-way to the stratosphere. Despite the hike's length, incline, and diminished levels of oxygen (especially for someone from oxygen-rich Indiana) at the top of the 14,118-foot mountain, the author saw the challenge of climbing it as an opportunity to push himself beyond his limits. The article highlights the planning, preparation, and perseverance that are required to reach any challenging goal.
The author equates the sense of accomplishment he felt upon reaching the top of Pike's Peak, despite the exhaustion and exertion, with accomplishing a long-term career goal of being bestowed as a Microsoft MVP Award winner. He attributes the success he has achieved to the support of those around him, including his wife, co-workers, and employer, that encouraged and supported him.
The article concludes by encouraging readers to pick their own mountain, their own personal challenge, and seek support to achieve it. It is an inspiring piece that highlights the importance of setting goals, working hard, and surrounding oneself with the right people to achieve success.
