Ideas: Language technologies for everyone with Kalika Bali
The Microsoft Research Podcast series, Ideas, brings together members of the research community to discuss the beliefs and experiences that drive their research and the positive human impact they hope to achieve through it. In this episode, host Gretchen Huizinga interviews Principal Researcher Kalika Bali, who has spent the last two decades developing language technology applications to bring generative AI to under-resourced and underserved language communities worldwide. Driven by her early vision of "talking computers" and her passion for linguistics, Bali's work has been aided by recent advances in large language models in the hope of providing access to AI in every language. The podcast covers several projects Bali has worked on, including Project VeLLM, Kahani: Visual Storytelling, and Digital Labour: Project Karya.
