Offboarding to on-premises from auto expanding archives is not supported

If you're planning to move (offboard) users who have auto-expanding archives enabled from Exchange Online to on-premises servers, there's some important information you need to know. Specifically, mailbox migrations from auto-expanding archives to on-premises servers are not currently supported. As a result, administrators need to be aware that any ongoing migrations will fail.
Starting in mid-November 2022 (for preview) and mid-December 2022 (for standard release), Microsoft will block offboarding/moving mailboxes from auto-expanding archives to on-premises Exchange for Exchange Online users, as this is an unsupported feature. According to Microsoft, "Auto-expanding archiving isn't supported for on-premises mailboxes in any version of Exchange Server." As a result, the change is designed to "fail early and gracefully with no data loss by adding a check whether the auto-expanding archive exists for a user."
To avoid any potential issues, administrators are advised to review the public documentation on enabling auto-expanding archiving and prepare accordingly. Ultimately, this change is important for ensuring data continuity and preventing unintended data loss for Exchange Online users who have auto-expanding archives enabled.
