Glenn Burnside: Managing Developers - Episode 257
In episode 257 of the “Managing Developers” series, Glenn Burnside, Principal Engineer at Skimmer, shares insights into effective software team management, along with some humorous anecdotes and personal experiences. Glenn has previously served as the Executive Vice President at Headspring and has held multiple development management positions, as well as leadership roles outside of the tech industry.
Glenn emphasizes the need for managers to focus on building a team that is humble, hardworking, and intelligent, and to look for demonstrated ability and prior track records while hiring. He stresses on finding someone that can learn and grow with the team, particularly in the case of younger developers, who often possess great skills but lack confidence.
In addition, Glenn discusses the importance of keeping the team aligned with a higher mission, and respecting every team member, not just individual players. He also emphasizes the significance of gathering industry-wide data points from sources outside one’s immediate circle and place of work.
The episode is geared towards managers and aspiring managers in the tech industry and is part of the “Managing Developers” podcast series.
