Collaborators: Teachable AI with Cecily Morrison and Karolina Pakėnaitė

The Collaborators podcast by Microsoft Research delves into the multidisciplinary and diverse collaborations behind impactful research projects. In this episode, Dr. Gretchen Huizinga interviews Cecily Morrison, MBE, a Senior Principal Research Manager at Microsoft Research, and Karolina Pakėnaitė, a PhD student and member of the citizen design team working with Morrison on the research project Find My Things. The project aimed to develop an AI phone application to assist blind or visually impaired individuals in locating personal items.

Morrison and Pakėnaitė discuss their approach to Teachable AI, which emphasizes empowering users to customize their AI experience. They also examine the benefits of inclusive design, including innovative solutions born from designing for a single user. Importantly, the two also shed light on the optimization of such systems and how more or higher-quality data might not necessarily translate to more effective solutions in the real world.

If you're interested in the intersection of AI and inclusive design, this episode of Collaborators is a must-listen. It offers insight into how technology is becoming more inclusive and how researchers are working to empower individuals to make AI work for them.
