Microsoft 365 Backup and Microsoft 365 Backup Storage at Ignite 2023

You have critical data stored in Microsoft 365 which means business continuity is more essential than ever in this era of rising ransomware attacks and security threats. To address these challenges, we have developed Microsoft 365 Backup—a new storage architecture for backup and data protection inside Microsoft 365. This storage lives inside the Microsoft 365 trust boundary, so you manage the security of your Microsoft 365 data in one place. 

Microsoft 365 Backup allows us to accelerate large scale backup and recovery times by an order of magnitude. Preliminary testing has shown recovery speeds with this new approach are more than 20 times faster than traditional backup architecture. Your data is kept in its native format, encrypted, geographically distributed, and secured within Microsoft 365.  

Microsoft 365 Backup provides these capabilities:  

1. Backup all or select SharePoint sites, OneDrive accounts, and Exchange mailboxes in your tenant.     

2. Restore OneDrive accounts, SharePoint sites, and mailbox items to a prior point in time for your entire tenant.  

3. Search or filter content in your backups using key metadata such as site names, owners, subject, creation/modification dates, and event types restore point date ranges.

The paid public preview of Microsoft 365 Backup will begin later in 2023 and will reach General Availability in the first half of 2024. Backup for other Microsoft 365 sources, such as Teams chat and other Microsoft 365 services, and granular file-level recovery are part of our post-GA roadmap.
