Generally available: Automation Update Management to Azure Update Manager migration tool

If you are a user of Azure Automation Update Management, it is important to note that it will be deprecated on 31st August 2024, as the Log Analytics agent it uses, also known as the Microsoft Monitoring Agent (MMA), will be retired. Therefore, we recommend that you move to Azure Update Manager before 31st August 2024. To aid in this process, the article provides insights on three methods for moving from Automation Update Management to Azure Update Manager.

The first method, which is recommended, is to use an automated migration tool that provides a minimal-click, automated way to move resources. This tool migrates machines and schedules at an automation account level. Once you click on the “Migrate Now” button in the portal from the deprecation banner, you can subsequently select an automation account. The tool lists all resources in the selected automation account that need to be moved, and the rest of the process is a 3-step process as described in the article.

The second method involves moving resources using automated migration scripts, which allow you to move resources in an automation account to Azure Update Manager in an automated fashion instead of manually migrating each resource. It is a scripts version of the portal experience described in the first method.

The third method involves using manual migration guidance. If you have built automation/customizations on top of your Automation Update management solution, then using the portal migration tool or migration scripts may not make sense for you, and you would need to move resources manually from Automation Update Management to Azure Update Manager.

It should be noted that Azure Update Manager is currently in Public Preview in Mooncake and Fairfax regions, and the Azure Update Manager, migration tool and scripts will soon be available in Mooncake and Fairfax regions in GA. The article also provides FAQs on the retirement and move to Azure Update Manager, including what will happen post 31st August if you do not migrate.

If you use Azure Automation Update Management, we recommend that you read this article to understand how to migrate to Azure Update Manager before the deprecation date.
